THE SESSION PAGES - Stories, Songs & Pictures from Larry's Studio Sessions

The Rain Might Wash Your Love Away (Click on title to listen to the song)

Carl Perkins, Don Potter and Brent Maher wrote this song for the Carl Perkins album "Born To Rock' on the Liberty/Universal record label in 1989. Yes, they were still making albums back then. Don and Brent were producing and had already recorded two songs from Patton Music Publishing on the project. One written by my wife Pamela and one by Paul Overstreet and myself.

They had the a-team of Nashville players on these sessions along with the legendary Jordanaires doing backup vocals but still needed someone to sing harmony with Carl on this song. The vocal range was just a little high for Carl to feel good about doing it himself.

CARL PERKINS

Carl suggested that they call me. He had taken the demos of me singing the two songs he had recorded home to learn them and his wife actually thought it was him singing. She said Carl, when did you record those songs. He told her that it was me and not him. He thought I would be a natural for the harmony.

I remember getting the message on my answering machine at home, which said, "Hey Larry, this is Brent Maher. Don and I were wondering if you would be interested in singing some harmony with Carl on this album." I was very excited and called them back right away to say yes.

BRENT MAHER

The harmony did come naturally in the studio. I listened to Carl's vocal track once and recorded the second time thru. Our phrasing was so close it was almost like singing with myself. I had never really realized how much of an influence Carl had on my singing until then.

JORDANAIRES

Some influence came from Carl and some came from growing up in a family of singers that said if you cannot find your own harmony part, do not sing. Singing on this session is definitely a notch in my belt of "Things that I will never forget". Carl was a true gentleman and a real pleasure to be around and this man had some great road stories.

When the album came out the credits on the back said,
Background Vocals by
The Jordanaires and Larry Patton
I have always been very proud of that.
