California
( 1974 )

In 1974, I was still very excited about being with Johnny Bush and the Bandoleros. We were traveling all around the U.S.A. and having a great time. I remember some where in California, maybe San Francisco, Andy Williams came by the venue before we played just to meet John and tell him how much he liked his singing. When I went to the bus to tell John that Andy Williams was there to see him, he thought I was joking and almost missed his chance to meet him. John's reply to me was "Why would Andy Williams want to meet me"?

Then there was the time in L.A. at the world famous Palomino Club when the great cowboy actor from the 1930's Monty Hale came to see us. He even autographed some Monty Hale comic books for us.

We did a show in a club just outside Mt. Shasta, Ca. and the place was packed with Johnny Bush fans. The show was going great the band was really tight, John was in great voice and soon it was time for intermission. While we were on break outside getting some fresh mountain air, a big country music tour bus pulled into the parking lot with the license plate that said "The Hag". The fact was that Merle Haggard lived just a few miles from this club and was on his way home from a tour when he heard that John and the band was playing that night. He was traveling alone on the bus except for the driver and a guy he had hired just to ride with him and play acoustic guitar while he played the fiddle. Haggard and Bush were very much into Bob Wills at that time and were both playing the fiddle on their shows.  Read on...
