I am reminded of the time that Paul and Linda McCartney came to the Grand Ole' Opry. The Opry had not been in its new home at Opryland very long and Paul was in Nashville recording an album called "Sally G". I just happened to be back stage when Paul and Linda arrived. I was there playing bass with Ronnie Milsap. They were both wearing white double-breasted suits, blue shirts, white shoes, and white ties; they were very clean and healthy looking and everyone back stage was in awe of them. They were very friendly and spoke to all of us like they knew us, and of course we all felt like we knew them.
The man known as the" King Of Country Music" (Roy Acuff) was the emcee of the Opry that night and someone sent him a note to tell him that the McCartneys were there and wanted to be brought out on the stage to say hello to the audience. So this is how that very humorously special Opry moment went, Roy announced to the crowd that there was a couple of special guests back stage and he was going to bring them out. He said, "How about a great round of applause for Paul….Paul…well one of them Beatle fellows and his lovely wife."
The crowd went absolutely wild, they were beyond amazed, they were so excited that they did not stop screaming and applauding for about fifteen minutes. When they did finally settle down, Roy turned to Paul and said, "You boys ain't done much since the band broke up, have you". Paul politely answered and said that they were in town because he was recording a new album and they were very much enjoying Music City. Roy then said, "I don't have any of your records myself, but my son has them all", Paul replied, that's all right Mr. Acuff, I do not have any of your records either. When Roy asks him who his favorite country singer was, he replied., "Kitty Wells". That is definitely one of my fondest Opry memories.
